Jug Band Jams - join us!
hosted by the Jug Nuts
My dear friend Michael Buonaiuto (local wizard of mandolin and homemade instruments) started these local jams, formerly run by our band the Squeakeasy Jug Band and currently with his/our new band the Jug Nuts.
These jams are inspired by the jug bands of the 1920s and ā30s - street bands of primarily African-American musicians in southern cities (notably Memphis, TN and Louisville, KY) who played a mix of jazz, blues and early country music on conventional and homemade instruments, eg washtub bass and washboard. This music was revived and expanded upon during the folk revival of the 1960s by people such as Jim Kweskin.
As of 2025, the Jug Nuts host two monthly jams: one in Arlington and one in Jamaica Plain. All are welcome to come and join in! Bring an instrument or just your voice and enthusiasm! Song lyrics and chords provided (as well as some kazoos, washboards, spoonsā¦)
Mostly 2nd Tuesday of the month @ The Donut Villa, Arlington
Mostly 3rd Wednesdays of the month @ The Haven, JP
The Squeakeasy Jug Band, leading our monthly jam at Adventure Pub in Arlington MA before pandemic shut it down :( RIP Dennis Markovitz aka Dr Squeak, clarinet player extraordinaire and all around lovely person, much missed ā„ļø
