These jams are inspired by the jug bands of the 1920s and β30s β street bands of primarily African-American musicians in southern cities (notably Memphis, TN and Louisville, KY) who played a mix of jazz, blues and early country music on conventional and homemade instruments, eg washtub bass and washboard. This music was revived and expanded upon during the folk revival of the 1960s by people such as Jim Kweskin. Michael Buonaiuto (dear friend and local wizard of mandolin & homemade instruments) has been running our local jams since 2019, currently with our new band the Jug Nuts, and pre-pandemic with our previous group The Squeakeasy Jug Band.
